New Year Bonfire

New Year Bonfire

Good afternoon. A group from Tokyo visited us at Taketokoro over the weekend. We had heavy snowfalls and the local trains were delayed or even canceled. So they had to take a taxy from Echigo-Yuzawa station.

We still did the new year traditional event called Dondo-Yaki. In the morning, we made a tower using rice straw and grass. We burned the tower with New Year decorations and the first calligraphy writing. It is believed your handwriting skills will improve if it burns well! Another tradition is to eat mochi rice cake. Eating with 17 kids and 4 staff members from Tokyo were fun. They made our event merrier. Karl gave them a presentation before having lunch at Shibui on Sunday.
