The Matsudai Karl Bengs House was created by reviving a historical Japanese inn Sho-Ei-Kan, which closed after 90 years of business. The first floor is a cafe and restaurant called Shibui. The second floor is the office for KARL BENGS AND ASSOCIATES.

The history and Revival of Sho-Ei-Kan

According to the book Matsudai Town in the 20th Century, the inn was in business as Tamura-ya Ryokan in 1917. At the time, the inn also operated as a freight office, sold revenue stamps, salt, and more to the locals. As times changed, the inn had gone through numerous renovations, but the main beams and framework has been preserved through the decades.

The Matsudai Karl Bengs House project aims to serve as an epicenter for the revitalization of Matsudai. And by preserving the history of this building, we hope to leave this cultural asset for future generations.
